Job title: Data Engineer — AI & Gen AI Platforms (Azure / AWS)

About the role
We are seeking a hands‑on Data Engineer with 4–6 years’ experience to design, build and optimise modern data platforms in complex enterprise and public‑sector environments in the Netherlands. You will work in Agile/Scrum teams alongside architects, analysts, BI engineers and Data Scientists to deliver reliable, scalable, and compliant data solutions that support analytics, reporting and GenAI initiatives.

Key responsibilities

• Design, develop and maintain ETL / ELT data pipelines for batch and near‑real‑time workloads.

• Build and optimise conceptual, logical and physical data models to support analytics and ML use cases.

• Integrate data from multiple source systems (on‑prem and cloud) and ensure end‑to‑end data lineage.

• Ensure data quality, metadata management, governance and GDPR compliance across data products.

• Support cloud data platform operations and migration initiatives (focus on Azure; familiarity with AWS services advantageous).

• Collaborate with data architects, product owners, BI teams and data scientists to translate business requirements into technical solutions.

• Monitor and optimise performance, reliability and scalability of pipelines, storage and query layers.

• Contribute to automation, CI/CD for data workflows and infrastructure as code.

• Provide operational support and troubleshoot production issues; document solutions and runbooks.

Required experience & skills (must‑have)

• 4–6 years hands‑on experience in data engineering in enterprise environments.

• Strong SQL skills: complex querying, query tuning and performance optimisation.

• Hands‑on ETL / ELT experience (designing, building and operating pipelines).

• Solid data modelling skills (conceptual, logical, physical).

• Experience with cloud data platforms — preferably Azure (Azure Data Factory, Databricks, Synapse or equivalent).

• Programming experience (Python or equivalent) for pipeline development, automation and scripting.

• Understanding of data governance, security and GDPR requirements and how to implement them.

• Comfortable working in Agile/Scrum delivery teams and collaborating with cross‑functional stakeholders.

• Good English communication skills (Dutch is preferred but not mandatory).

Important skills to have (AWS / Gen AI ecosystem)

• Experience with AWS data services is a plus: Amazon S3, AWS Glue, Amazon Athena, AWS Lambda, Amazon Aurora.

• Familiarity with ML/AI workflows and platforms such as Amazon SageMaker and Amazon Bedrock (or equivalent LLM/GenAI services).

• Experience with data lake architectures, cataloging and serverless querying.

• Experience with orchestration tools (Airflow, Step Functions, Azure Data Factory pipelines) and serverless patterns.

Desirable / nice‑to‑have

• Experience with Databricks, Spark, or other big data processing frameworks.

• Knowledge of containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).

• Familiarity with monitoring and observability tools for data platforms (Prometheus, Grafana, Cloud native monitoring).

• Experience implementing CI/CD for data pipelines and infrastructure as code (Terraform, ARM templates, Bicep).

• Experience working in public‑sector organisations or highly regulated industries.
